������������� of Nursing and Health Sciences, Preparing for the Worst with an Active Shooter Simulation in the Hospital

Salt Lake City – June 24, 2021 As part of a city-wide preparatory event, ������������� partnered with Jordan Valley West Medical Center, West Valley City Police and Fire Departments, and other community services to simulate an active shooter scenario in an effort to be better prepared in the case of an emergency. This comprehensive drill included fake victims and fake injuries, blank rounds, a 9-1-1 call, emergency response, and more in order to make it as realistic as possible.

Dozens of ������������� students participated as “victims” of the event, using the help of makeup artists to fully embrace their roles. In an interview with , Kirk Roberts, a clinical instructor at ������������� and charge nurse at Jordan Valley West commented that healthcare professionals “have to plan for any case scenario.” While it’s highly unlikely an event of this severity would occur, having a plan in place beforehand ensures hospital staff will be able to handle it accordingly should disaster strike.

������������� believes it is of the utmost importance to give its students opportunities to prepare for real-world scenarios such as this that they may encounter as they embark upon their careers in the field of healthcare. Each student that volunteered to help is now even better equipped to deal with the medical emergencies they may encounter.
